Impact crater Dellen (2025):On our Northern Sweden 2025 trip we visited the impact crater Dellen, second time for me. |
Näsviken:
We started at Delsbo and driving to Näsviken. Along this Southern road of the impact we couldn't find any clear view to the crater as I did 20 years ago, the forest is too high. There is a road across the crater and that's the way we took.
This is the water that flow out from the crater. Hålsjö:
Hålsjö is not far from the center of the crater. The diameter of it is 20 km and far away between the islands we can see the Southern rim of the crater, 10 km away.
A bird watching tower make it easier for us to take photos. But birds likes to sit here and they shit a lot so it wasn't that nice.
|
A panoramic view of the Southern rim. |
We had to move 500 meters Eastward to get a free view without the islands blocking the view.
From here it's much easier to get an idea how big this crater is.
The lake is Sördellen.
In the background hidden by the hill is Delsbo. |

These stones are shaped by the ice age, it has been many ice ages during 90 millions years.
From a topographic map it looks like this with the circle correspond to the crater, find it at: Kartbild.com
Norrbo:
A bridge over the river that connect the two lakes, this is in Norrbo.
South view to the lake Sördellen.
North view from the bridge, a small river connect the lakes Norrdellen with Sördellen. Avholmsberget:
At the Western side of the crater is a viewpoint, Avholmsberget.
Are these the rocks from the original crater rim, I think so but they has experienced 1000 of meters heavy ice in periods.
These round shapes came from the ice age. |
This view is so wonderful, one of few places in Europe where you can have this view over a big crater. |
The restaurant to the left and the lake is Norrdellen.
From one of the islands they have taken mineral samples. One of the minerals is Dellenit or Andesit, it was emerged from the ground by the impact. The mineral gave the name and the lakes and the impact crater.
Northeast view.
Now was the plan to drive the Northern road back at the crater rim, but my sport car couldn't handle that bad road. If you find it interesting you can read about the whole Northern Sweden trip we did, here: Northern Sweden 2025. |
