My HIFI systems 1970s to 1980s

Content:

  1. Mono HIFI, early 1970s
  2. 4 channel HIFI, late 1970s
  3. 2 channel HIFI, early 1980s

Note:
I take no responsibility or liability for what are written here, you use the information at your own risk!

What I'm writing here are not about any fancy super HIFI equipment but something that was important for me, to built something by myself.

3: 2 channel HIFI, 1980s

In the 1980s it wasn't economic to compete with home built HIFI equipment, they were mass produced to a low cost. I had more money too. But one problem, I had lost my interest to have these big HIFI equipment in my small flat. I sold my four Sonab 2212 speakers but I had problem to sell them in the early 1980s and got very low paid. Today they are very collectable and have a high value.

Pioneer compact system:

2/4 channel HIFI, 1970s to 1980s

I looked for some compact HIFI system and found a Pioneer system, it was in 1983. Less quality compare to my old system. I still kept my concept with an equalizer. But the four channel system wasn't anymore. The cassette player could play both side of the cassette with automatic. It was a lot of problems with the mechanics, had it to the workshop many times. At the end they replaced it with a new. Also this equipment was bought at Söderbergs. One thing I used a lot was the timer, I could wake up to music ! Earlier I had bought a second set of Yamaha's headphone HP1. My friend Robert had one too.

Laser Disc, S-VHS:

2/4 channel HIFI, 1970s to 1980s

New exiting equipment, the year is 1993. A Pioneer Laser disc player. You could only found the US standard NTSC movies, useless for big screens TV I would say, sold it quickly. On top of that a JVC S-VHS video recorder with comb filter and Nicam stereo. Poor quality with todays standard, but in that time it was very good for home use. I can see on the photo that I have a new JVC receiver, I can't remember that I had that one. It looks old, maybe something I bought used. I also had a very power full amplifier, a Denon 2x300 Watt, but in a flat it was not much use of it and I sold it soon. In the cabinet there are vinyl discs, but where is the turn table ?

For a while I had Hitachi speakers with a very big bas element, they had a wonderful wooden work of the cabinet. They was bought used and very old. I had some Yamaha receivers, forgotten most of them.

Compact Disc, CD:

In the 1980s the Compact Disc, CD, was introduced. The vinyl disc you have to change every 20 minutes, a CD every 70 minutes. I felt that even with CD it was too often.

Pioneer PD F905 CD 101 disc changer

I got lazy and bought a 100 CD disc changer. This was maybe my third CD player, it's a Pioneer PD F905 model. It had the capacity of 100 +1 CDs. Very handy and it looked nice with its all lights when changing CDs. Still owned by my friend Lars who bought it from me in early 2000s.

More information about the Pioneer PD F905:

I liked the CD system, when I wanted to listen at loud volume I use the head phones. With CD the background noise was reduced a lot and much more enjoyable to listen to.

The end of my HIFI equipment:

This was the end for my HIFI interest, later it was the video that attracted me most. With the new format DVD which had 5 channel sound and pretty good image quality I can do what I couldn't do in the 1970s. Back to multi channel system.

So much money spent on these HIFI systems, more wise had been to use the money for something else, or ? No, it was fun for me in that time and that is important. Sometimes I can miss my old equipment, so much time I spent on working to afford it and time to built them. But when I look today what very high prices they sell them for I will never bought them back again.
