I recently bought a second Nikon D800 DSLR camera. My idea is to IR mod it and use it with my Duo Narrow band filter.

Here is the camera waiting in the box to be IR modified. I have to figure out much of how to do it myself, but I found a YouTube video: Nikon D800 / D810 : full spectrum conversion : How to , I hope it helps. This will be done all the summer days we have with rain.

When the IR modification is done there are more things I want to do with the camera. Remove the camera mirror is one of them. Before the modification the camera's weight is 898 gram without battery.


Tools:

I think one of the bigger problems when disassembling the camera will be getting the screws out. They are of Japanese standard and maybe not exactly the same as we normally have tools for here in Europe. In the past, Japan used the inch standard, later they switched to the metric SI system. Parts of the camera, for example the bayonet, are sized in inch standard. Are the screws of the more modern metric standard?

Here I have looked up from my drawers what tools I have for working with small screws.

If you don't have exactly the right profile on your screwdriver, there is a big risk of damaging the screw. Then you have created problems for yourself.

Some screws will certainly be difficult to loosen. In that case, it is a good idea to carefully drop a thin oil on the screws or perhaps isopropanol. You can also heat the screw, if I need to, I try using a soldering iron for that.

A set of pliers will be needed, tweezers and perhaps a wrench.

This is a digital camera and as such it is sensitive to electrical discharges. With this one that you put on around your wrist I can make myself grounded to prevent discharges happen, even the work surface should be weakly conductive and grounded.

I will certainly have to supplement my tools with some special ones, especially of higher quality. But at least I have something so I can start testing disassembling the camera.
