My travel in Europe:
From Malaga to Alicante, Spain 2026

Content:

Day 1, From Stockholm to Malaga

A couple of years ago we followed the Spanish' coast, from Alicante to Barcelona. This time we want to do the same again but at another part of the Mediterranean coast. We will land in Malaga and from there go by bus or train to Alicante during ten days.

Day 1. Arlanda, Stockholm:

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

We live in Stockholm in Sweden and have our airport at Arlanda. The flight depart 8 pm and we could relax and eat before we enter the plane.

Day 2. Malaga:

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

We arrive at Malaga after midnight and now try to find our department we booked, we both called and sent messages to the stay so what could go wrong? This stay is controlled by codes, but there was no terminal for that at this door. We had another address too, it's on the other side of the building. There we could open the street door with the code but not the door to the room we booked. A little panic starts, the clock is now 1 am, no one answer us when we asking for help by message or by phone. After a while we decided to look for another hotel in the midnight, not so easy. After a while we found one with a free room. What a nightmare this trip started with. Next morning we got a message from the stay with a photo of the entrance where our stay was, at another address and department name! Still no refund for this first night.

This was the hotel we found at midnight, Hotel Guadalmedina. Lucky us that there were a free room.

You've read about the floods they've had in Spain and other countries the last years. Enormous amounts of water come down from the mountains. They've built flood channels like this through the cities. This one doesn't looks like it had much water flow in recent years. Our room was right next to this channel.

Google Map over Malaga Centro Historico:

Malaga's old town with its marina. This is where we walking around these first two days.

At Wikipedia you find more information about Malaga:

Now when the problem with our department was solved we can relax and take a walk to the Historic City of Malaga. It's a shame that we lost a half day because of the department problem and we couldn't sleep well either.

But before we walk to the old city we must take a walk to the main bus station and check what busses we have to chose from for further travel. This is Fuente de la estacion de Malaga, East of the city center.

Gunilla noticed that there were many trees that blooming in beautiful blue colors. We haven't seen them on previous visits to the Spanish Mediterranean coast, but we've also never been here so close to the summer, in the middle of May.

When Gunilla googles what kind of tree it could be, she finds out that it's a Jacaranda tree. You know, the type of tree that was so popular to make furniture of in the 1970s, today that type of tree is protected.

Plaza de la Marina:

We start by exploring the old town at the harbor where the Plaza de la Marina fountain is located. In the background up on the mountain we see the Alcazaba de Malaga fortress.

We are going towards the fort but we choose to go through the inner parts of the old town. However, we are not going up to the fort but to the bottom of the mountain where an old Roman ruin is located. We turn back towards the old town and cross the main road again.

Jardin de la Catedral:

At the east side of the square you found this gate, it looks to be very old.

A sign on the bridge informs us that it was Germany that helped renovate this old bridge in 1984.
