Day 4, From Almeria to MojacarIt wasn't so easy to figure out how to come from Almeria to Mojacar. The bus departure 2 pm so we have time to walk around in Almeria before we leave the town. There are two places to visit or stay at Mojacar, Mojacar Pueblo and Mojacar Playa. The bus station is between them, 1 km in to walk in each direction. In the Almeria old town, Mercado Central:
First we visit the Mercado Central de Almeria and it was open now in the morning. Here they have displayed a lot of different spices. P. de Almeria:
At the harbor there are parks with fountains that we could visit and we follow the parade street halfway to that place. Fuente de la Salle:
Last street we followed to the harbor was Avenue Federico Gardia Lorca. We got a new fountain to look at, they made them beautiful here. Estatua de la Caridad:
Next we came to the square Plaza de las Velas. At one side this statue stands. Plaza de las Velas:
At the same square is also this fountain, the Obelisk, or what can its name be? Fuente del Remador:
Now we have come to the park that follows the harbor and get a new fountain in view, the Remador. Fuente de los Delfines:
Next park and fountain is the Dolphin fountain. Templete de la Musica:
This is a memorial park for all the women who were murdered by their husbands. It sounds horrible, I hope I translated it correctly from the Spanish. Fuente de los Peces:
This was the last fountain we visited, Fuente de los Peces. Here we turned around and walk to the bus station. Cargadero de Cable Ingles:
As we approach the bus station we see this. It looks like a railway but it is a transport track to the English Harbor. Today it is used by tourists who can walk out on it and get a view of the harbor. The bus trip to Mojacar. Map, Almeria to Mojacar:From Malaga to Mojacar it's 95km. At Wikipedia you find more information about Mojacar:
Almeria's railway station:
Almeria has a very beautiful railway station, but no railway goes here today, only ticket sales. The bus station is behind this building.
Here we are sitting waiting for our bus, it leaves at 2 pm.
Here we leave the city to Almeria, not far from the city center. Mojacar Pueblo:
Here we have just left the bus station in Mojacar. Our hotel is up in the village Mojacar Pueblo on the hill. 1 km walk, ten minutes walk, but it steep upwards and it's hot, it took us 15 minutes. Hotel Simon:
The first thing we do when we arrive in the village is check into our hotel. A small cozy hotel, we check in and go up to the room. |

We have a balcony with sea view.
Before we explore the mountain village above, we need to have something to eat. You don't get that hungry when it's hot but fluids are important. Fuente Publica de Mojacar:
What we first want to see is the fountain, it should be down there according to the map. Fuente Publica:
Here is the fountain, so beautiful. It has a 500 years history and the village a 4000 years history.
The water pour out from these tubes. When we was here cars come and people get out with big cans to collect the water.
Now the real challenge begins, the road goes steeply uphill and it is very hot.
The reward we get is the beautiful view. Our hotel is behind the big white building.
A plant clings to the rock, perhaps it is a Bougavillea. Plaza Nueva:
It wasn't far to walk, but it was tough walking upwards the steep hill. Here we catch up and have an ice cream before continuing.
The view from the terrace, it is in a northwest direction and with big mountains in the background.
There's supposed to be a castle here with a viewpoint. We'll find it.
The lower terrace, in background left, the upper viewpoint.
After walking around the narrow alleys of this village, we feel satisfied. We look for a suitable way back without going the same way we came up. Iglesia de Santa Maria:
After studying the map, we see that we should walk around St. Mary's Church and then follow the road down the alleys.
On the way we pass a small square and then we follow the escape route from the city and it goes very steeply downhill.
It's not long now before we reach the level where our hotel is located. Hotel Simon:
Finally we have returned to our little cozy hotel Simon.
We rest for a couple of hours at the hotel, sit on the balcony and enjoy the view until we get hungry. Most of the restaurants were up on the mountain and we don't have the energy to go there again. We settle for walking across the street to the hotel and eating, here too we have a fantastic view to enjoy. |
