Day 5, From Mojacar to Cartagena

This day we are going to Cartagena, but before we jump on the bus we would like to visit Mojacar Playa. It also turns out to be easier to find a bus there to take us on.

Mojacar Pueblo:

We already planned todays trip yesterday evening and looked for busses that we can take. Now in the morning we can relax and enjoy the breakfast.

We continue walking to Playa del Palmeral where we could take the bus. All these busses always feel, will they come or do they stop here.

The bus trip to Cartagena.

Map, Mojacar (Playa de Palmeral) to Cartagena:

From Malaga to Mojacar it's 170km. There are two stops where we have to change bus, Vera and Lorca.

At Wikipedia you find more information about Cartagena:

Vera:

With the first bus we came to Vera where we had to change bus. But there were two hours between them. That let us to take a walk in Vera, we decided to walk to the main square.

We know there was a church at the square and here we could see it.

In front of the church we have the square we came for.

Main square:

There are more than one restaurant here and we took something to eat.

All Spanish squares has something to look at, here is the fountain.

The two hours we had run away quickly, we had to go back to the bus station and take next bus. We can read that Vera is famous for its nudist areas, we saw nothing of that.

Lorca:

The next stop and bus change was in Lorca. We didn't find much information about this bus change but the bus driver tries to tell us that the next bus stops at the same bus stop. We stand here and waiting.

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

We stay here in Lorca and wonder what place we are in, we found that it were an earthquake here in 2011 that killed at least 9 people. After 5 minutes the next bus arrived and we could continue to Cartagena and we didn't experience any earthquake.

After 40 minutes on the bus we saw this massive fortress through the window. Don't remember the place but it was before we arrived in Murcia.

Cartagena's main bus station, it's big.

We can already see when we come out of the bus station that we will like Cartagena and we will be here for 3 days.

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

Nice benches have been set up along the path as we walk towards our accommodation.

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

After a few hundred meters more we see this, an old Roman road has been excavated.

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

We live here opposite the restaurant. We have rented a large apartment of 80 square meters and on two floors. It is located right in the middle of the old town of Cartagena. Look to the left of the photo, here under the house there is a large Roman excavation. We didn't see that until after 2 days, there was so much else to see that interested us.

Plaza de San Francisco:

50 meters from our accommodation is the Plaza de San Francisco. On the ground is the location of the old Roman forum. It still remains underground, although buried.

Isidoro Maiqvez:

At one end of the square we found this statue. On older photos from the 1930s we saw that this statue was in the center of the square.

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

There are many museums in Cartagena. Here we can see through a fence into one of them, which we will visit tomorrow.

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

An old lonely house stands near the square. We see many houses where only the facade remains, they are building a new house inside the old one.

Spain, From Malaga to Alicante, 2026

On the empty gables of the houses there are many facade paintings. Some of them are very beautiful.

We arrived late in Cartagena after a long bus ride. We are quite tired and this evening we are staying near the square outside our house. Here we have sat down to eat something small and have some drinks.
