The first thing we are going to do this morning is visit the Alicante Historical Museum. We are going towards the northern part of Alicante's old town.

Plaza Gabriel Miro:

This beautiful place, Plaza Gabriel Miro, cannot be passed by without stopping for a while. We have been here several times before, but the enjoyment of the beautiful park is always top notch.

Tresoreria Ajuntament d'Alacant:

Now we have arrived at the museum, the entrance is at the large grille in the building on the right. The museum itself is the ground floor of this building. This museum is so insignificant that it is not even included in the lists of museums to visit in Alicante.

Since we couldn't find any information about the museum, we didn't really know what we would find here. But on previous visits we have peeked in through the grille and seen old ruins, we thought they were probably from Roman times.

Now that we can take a closer look at what this excavation shows, we see that these are medieval buildings, the oldest from the 12th century. At that time, it was the Moors who ruled here in Spain.

Here at the museum they have built models of what Alicante has looked like through the ages. On all the models the medieval fortress on the mountain dominates.

Here you can see the fort Castell de Santa Barbara on the top right and this is from a long time ago, perhaps the 13th century. The city gate was not facing the sea at that time, as you can see on later models. Here it faces southwest.

Here the city wall is excavated, it is the outer wall. The fortification walls usually consisted of two walls with storage spaces in between. On the model, this wall is on the right at the bottom of the model above.

After we leave the museum, we walk around and look for where the later portal into the city may have been. We know that the port of that time, much like the portal we see here, is about 50 meters to the left and slightly closer to us. The museum is on the other side of the portal, 50 meters to the right.

Calle Pl. Paseito Ramiro:

We go back to the street where the museum was located and continue northeast on that street. Here the old wall has advanced along the street. The wall we see here is perhaps from a slightly later time. This wall is located about 100 meters from the museum. On top of the wall is the Basilica de Santa Maria.

We continue to follow the wall to the northeast. According to the model we have looked at, it should end with a tower and then turn 90 degrees up towards the mountain where the fort is located.

In the openings in the wall we can see a second wall inside.

There on the far edge it looks like the ruins of a tower.

That's exactly what we guessed. Here the oncoming wall comes down from the fort at a steep angle. Today's archaeology exercises end here.

Calle de la Virgen del Socorro:

We have a nice memory of a nice restaurant a little further away. It is located on top of a terrace facing the sea and offers a fantastic view of the sea. Is it still there? Yes, now we will have a slice of pizza and a drink.

Pasarela del Postiguet:

After enjoying the view, we now head back, but not the same way. There is a footbridge over the road that we can take and get down to the beach Playa del Postiguet.

We didn't swim once on this 10-day tour, but now we at least got the chance to dip our feet in the sea. Many others do too.

We've got a lot of sand on our feet and here we can rinse it off.

Explanade de Espana:

We continue on, here is the fancy promenade that runs on the edge of the city houses and along the harbor. It is really nice here, but one thing bothers us, there is too much noise from the car traffic. We turn up towards the city alleys where it is quieter.

Finally we find a quiet place where we can get something to drink. It is at least 32 degrees Celsius and it is very hot for us northerners.

Lab 5:

We first walk past what looks like a nice old hotel. But no, it's an old preserved house and it's open so you can go inside.

There are a few exhibitions to see, but above all the beautiful house. We go up one floor to see further.

A beautiful ceiling with sculptures, or decorations, actually looks like bats, but I might be wrong.

In another room this cabinet is on display, it doesn't look very old to my eyes. Now we have read that this house is just one of several that are included in this exhibition. They are located quite close to each other.

At the very bottom of the building is this ventilation shaft.

Here we leave the old building, we plan to go to bed early and slowly start walking towards the hotel. Our flight leaves at 6 am and we need to leave the hotel at 2 am. However, something scary happens now, I suddenly feel my pants starting to twitch, what is happening? Well, a pickpocket has got her hand in my pants and is going to take my wallet. But today I have changed into a different pair of shorts and they have buttons over the pockets so the little lady who is trying to take my wallet cannot untie it. What enormous luck, imagine losing both credit cards and ID documents 10 hours before the flight leaves. It scares me quite a lot with the problems it would cause. In the future, I need to have a more secure way to store valuables.

The night journey to the airport goes well even though we had to wait 20 minutes for the airport bus, it was packed with people, but we managed to squeeze in.

Here we have arrived home to Stockholm. We took a bus from the airport and here we will board the train that goes south.

What was the best thing about this trip? Cartagena was wonderful, but many other places too, nothing we would have wanted to miss.

The most important lesson, keep your passport and credit cards safe and it's very boring to come home again.
